一、课程性质与任务
《英国文学》课是全国高校英语语言文学专业本科高年级阶段的专业方向课程。设置本课程，旨在使学生对英国文学形成和发展的全貌有一个大概的了解，丰富知识，提高英语语言能力和人文素质；通过对文学史上具有代表性作家的代表性作品片断的教学，使学生了解作品的内容，理解作品的思想性和艺术性，初步掌握分析和评价文学作品的方法和标准，培养对英文的鉴赏力。由于本课程以英国文学史为主线，以作家作品为重点，学生要仔细阅读有关文学史和原作品，通过阅读，把握英国文学形成和发展的主线，增强对英国文学作品的理解，特别是对作品中表现的社会生活和人物思想感情的理解，提高阅读文学作品的能力和鉴赏水平。

四、教学方法与教学手段
1、本课程仅有75学时，既要简要介绍英国文学的历史，又要分析重点作家的作品，因此，本课程宜采取课堂重点讲授和布置课外阅读的方法进行。对比较难懂的作品先由教师讲解，然后引导学生就其思想性和艺术手法进行讨论，再由教师小结评述，也可以布置课外阅读，尽可能地培养学生的自学能力。
2、讲授时宜以文学史为线索，关注各个时期的文学思潮，选教各时期最有代表性的作家的一个作品片断。本大纲规定讲授文学史知识和作品选读的学时，仅供教师参考。所列课时大于75学时，旨在为教师留下选择的余地。教师可根据各自的条件和不同的教学对象，适当改变选读的作品。学生在阅读课中读到的作品，一般不重复选读。
3、教师的课堂教学应以学生为中心，运用启发式教法，注重培养学生分析和解决问题的能力。
4、本课程以英语讲授，使用多媒体辅助教学。
五、考核方式及练习要求：
1、每次上课，学生必须提前预习，熟悉有关内容，为积极主动地参与课堂讨论作好准备。
2、每次课后，教师必须布置课外阅读任务，并对下次课的预习内容提出要求。
3、本课程的作业分为书面和口头两种形式。口头作业可包括课内回答问题，参与课堂讨论和课外阅读，一般每次课都应布置口头练习，教师要予以评判、记分；书面作业，可布置学生书面回答问题、阐释作品片断、写短评等，每学期至少要布置两次。教师要认真批改学生作业。
4、期中随堂考查；期末出A、B卷考试。考查可用开卷形式，考试一般为闭卷。
